Space & Blue Forum Sardegna 2030: a success that exceeded expectations for the hub organised by NeMeA Sistemi
The Sala Lodovici at Olbia Airport hosted a crucial event for the future of technological innovation and sustainability. The Space & Blue Forum Sardinia 2030, entitled “From Space to the Sea: infrastructure, data and new economies”, concluded with outstanding results: a very high turnout of members of the public, industry professionals and institutional representatives, demonstrating just how topical and strategic this issue is for the country’s development.
Under the moderator’s guidance Antonio Usai (UNISS), the day began with a speech by Roberto Minerdo, President of the ONTM (National Observatory for the Protection of the Sea). The three subsequent technical panels provided insights of the very highest calibre, thanks to presentations by industry leaders such as theItalian Space Agency, the Port System Authority of the Sardinian Sea and the Coastguard, supported by leading scientific and industrial organisations including RINA, Cipnes, Siportal, SIGE, Deep Green Italy and NeMeA Sistemi.
Space and the Sea: the eco-robotic approach and the Digital Twin
Against this backdrop of strong convergence, Space and Sea emerge as closely interconnected environments in which humans live and which require an ever-deeper understanding. As highlighted by Emanuele Giorgi (NeMeA Sistemi Programme Manager), thesatellite observation and advanced analysis of information flows are essential for deciphering environmental dynamics, particularly those of the marine environment. The environment must be approached as an interconnected ecosystem, to be preserved and harnessed through a virtuous cycle structured in four phases: monitoring, conservation, restoration and enhancement.
Nowadays, monitoring is no longer limited to simply gathering information, but aims to transform it into genuine, shared knowledge. This is where theEco-robotics, which utilises automation and artificial intelligence to support environmental protection. IoT sensors, satellites, drones and smart buoys now make it possible to collect vast amounts of environmental data. This data, processed by predictive algorithms and integrated into Digital Twin (digital twins) provide essential scientific and strategic decision-making support to assist in the conservation and enhancement of our natural heritage.
The latest development: the vision of the Sardinia Technology Cluster
At the heart of the debate was the presentation of an innovation designed for the local area: the project to create a Technology Cluster in Sardinia entirely devoted to Space & Blue technologies and to the Deep Tech. An ambitious challenge that aims to link the innovation ecosystem, scientific research and the industrial sector in order to position the island as a leading hub in the Mediterranean. The objective is clear: to transform satellite observation, environmental protection and deep technologies into drivers of certified and sustainable economic development.
The forward-looking vision behind the initiative was outlined in a speech by Michele P. Boella (CEO of NeMeA Sistemi – Chair of the IT Section of Confindustria Centro Nord Sardegna), who stated: “Why Sardinia? Because, in my view, Sardinia is a natural hub; it is a continent where these two realms — Space and the Sea — undoubtedly intersect. My aim, with the help of the latest ministerial decrees and the initiatives of the Italian Space Agency, is to bring together organisations capable of embracing diverse ‘spirits’ and functioning as Technology Clusters, with whom we can engage in dialogue that will bring new opportunities to the region.”
