SmartGate and NeMeA Sistemi: innovation, protection and collaboration in the Geoportal for environmental monitoring

The MEDSEA Foundation, which has always been at the forefront of conservation of the Mediterranean’s vital wetlands, within the TransformAr project – Accelerating and upscaling transformational adaptation in Europe: DEMONSTRATION OF WATER-RELATED INNOVATION PACKAGES (funded under the European Union’s Horizon H2020 innovation action programme), has given rise to the design of a smart sluice gate and a monitoring network. The aim of the project is to strengthen the resilience of lagoon ecosystems in the face of the challenges posed by climate change.

As part of the project, NeMeA Sistemi has developed the Geoportal dedicated to environmental monitoring and the management of the sluice gate, a crucial element for the effectiveness of the entire system and for the implementation of an innovative and sustainable management model.

NeMeA Sistemi’s role: technology serving the environment

NeMeA has designed a advanced digital platform which offers operators the ability to view essential data in real time from multi-parameter probes installed in the lagoon, which provide information on the water’s chemical and physical parameters, such as dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature and water level.

The geoportal allows you to constantly monitor the the state of the lagoon environment and, crucially, to automatically activate the system for opening and closing the sluice gate based on the measurements taken. This enables dynamic, immediate and precise management of water resources.

The integration of the monitoring system with automated management enables prompt action to be taken to maintain the lagoon’s hydrochemical balance, thereby protecting biodiversity and supporting local economic activities, such as fishing.

A model that can be replicated: the San Giovanni pond

The pilot site is the San Giovanni Pond, in the municipality of Terralba, the only area in Italy involved in the European TransformAr project, which benefits directly from this technology. The project aims to test a new model for managing natural resources, based on the intelligent and responsible use of digital technologies.

Thanks to the contribution of NeMeA Sistemi, the TransformAr project is a concrete example of how technological innovation and environmental protection can be effectively integrated. This approach not only ensures more efficient and sustainable management of wetlands, but also creates a model that can be replicated in other Mediterranean contexts. Collaboration between foundations, specialist companies and local communities is therefore proving vital in tackling contemporary environmental challenges with modern, adaptive solutions.
