Sky and sea meet in Olbia: ‘NeMeA Sistemi’ is the organiser of the Space & Blue Forum Sardegna 2030
Combining the infinitely high with the iridescent depths to chart a course towards sustainability. This is how one might summarise the aim of the Space & Blue Forum Sardinia 2030, the major event due to take place Thursday 11 June 2026 (from 3.00 pm) in the Sala Ludovici at theOlbia Airport. This event, entitled “From Space to the Sea: infrastructure, data and new economies”, has been organised with a clear aim: to demonstrate how the use of satellite data, investment programmes and Artificial Intelligence are not distant concepts, but the foundations of a new digital economy capable of transforming the management and protection of the island’s most fragile ecosystems into high-precision models.
The synergy between institutions and scientific research
The event stems from the strategic vision of ONTM (National Observatory for the Protection of the Sea), the organisation that promotes the conservation of marine heritage through technological innovation and institutional dialogue, and by the organisation of NeMeA Sistemi led by CEO Michele P. Boella, in his capacity as Chair of the IT Section of Confindustria Central and Northern Sardinia and a member of the Confindustria Aerospace Technical Group.
The opening session will feature strong institutional support, with speeches by the Honourable Salvatore Deidda (Chair of the Chamber of Deputies’ 9th Transport Committee), the Mayor of Olbia, Settimo Nizzi, and Aldo Carta (Director-General of the CIPNES and Chairman of the UniOlbia Consortium), demonstrating how north-eastern Sardinia is positioning itself as a key hub for the blue and green economy.
From satellite data to coastal ‘management’
The Forum will focus on three main themes that illustrate in practical terms how data will change the way we protect the environment:
- Security and space-based data streams: the first panel will discuss how satellite constellations (such as the Italian COSMO-SkyMed technology or the PLATINO missions) provide watchful ‘eyes’ for the monitoring of the coastal area, the safety at sea and the emergency management, working in close collaboration with the Coastguard and the Port System Authority.
- The scientific platform for the region: the focus will then shift to applied technologies. Organisations such as ISPRA (involved in the PNRR-MER projects), the CNR NeMeA Sistemi itself will explain how to turn raw data into operational tools, such as the marine robotics and the monitoring sensors, to prevent environmental risks.
- Certifying the value of nature: the final piece of the jigsaw will concern the economic and ecological development. Thanks to the support of organisations such as thePorto Conte Marine Protected Area and RINA, it will become clear how environmental data can be transformed into ‘certified value’, enabling local areas and businesses to scientifically demonstrate the effectiveness of their sustainability and biodiversity conservation measures.
This initiative marks a crucial moment in spatial planning: the ultimate aim is not merely to assess the current state of our sea, but to anticipate future changes in order to develop truly resilient models of economic and tourism development for Sardinia in 2030.
