NeMeA Sistemi and ONTM: a synergy between innovation, business and maritime culture
Technology, sustainability and the ability to work as a network: the collaboration between NeMeA Sistemi and ONTM – National Observatory for the Protection of the Sea It stems from the convergence of diverse areas of expertise and a shared vision. The aim is to help build a model in which innovation, knowledge and environmental responsibility can translate into new opportunities for the country and its marine heritage.
Some partnerships arise from complementary areas of expertise, whilst others develop around a shared vision. The partnership between NeMeA Sistemi and ONTM encompasses both aspects.
On the one hand, a technology company specialising in data and systems integration, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Earth observation, remote sensing and digital technologies, including those applied to environmental monitoring. On the other hand, an Observatory that works to to promote the sea as a strategic resource for the country, by forging links between institutions, businesses, research organisations and stakeholders, and by promoting innovation, a sustainable blue economy and the protection of ecosystems.
The common ground is the belief that sustainability requires knowledge and that, in order to have a real impact, that knowledge must be translated into tools, projects and the ability to work collaboratively.
A natural link between these organisations is Michele P. Boella, CEO of NeMeA Sistemi and a member of the ONTM Executive Committee, as well as Chair of the IT Section of Confindustria Centro Nord Sardegna and a member of Confindustria’s Aerospace Technical Group. These different roles all share a common aim: to forge links between business, technological innovation, the production system and institutions, thereby creating the conditions for expertise and ideas to be transformed into projects.

The joint initiatives undertaken over time have already demonstrated how the collaboration between NeMeA and the Observatory can create opportunities for dialogue on the major issues of sustainability, innovation and the future of the maritime sector. However, the value of a partnership is also measured by its ability to go beyond individual projects and events.
The aim is to foster collaboration that can build networks, promote environmental awareness and a culture of innovation, and forge new links between those who generate knowledge, those who develop technology, those who represent institutions, and those who operate at a local level and within the economy.
In this context, doing business also means playing a responsible part in the changes taking place in our time. And protecting the sea means recognising that its future concerns not only the environment, but also the quality of development, the competitiveness of local areas and future generations.
Communication, too, is a form of caring
So, talking today about marine conservation It means moving beyond a purely conservative view of sustainability. Protecting an ecosystem means understanding it, observing its changes, anticipating the risks it faces and making the most of its resources without upsetting its balance.
From this perspective, technological innovation and environmental awareness are moving in the same direction. Satellites, sensors, geographic information systems, artificial intelligence, robotics and Digital Twins offer increasingly advanced tools for understanding the land and the maritime domain. But data alone is not enough: it must be transformed into information, knowledge and, ultimately, awareness capable of guiding decisions and behaviour.
It is also in this area that the collaboration between the two organisations is finding a new form of expression in the digital sphere: NeMeA has created the the Observatory’s new website, by putting its technological and digital expertise to work in promoting the activities, projects and themes that drive the ONTM world.
Because a website is not merely a technological tool; it is a meeting place and a gateway to knowledge. Public outreach and geoinformation also form part of this mission. Technology can help us understand the sea, collaboration can turn knowledge into action, and communication can ensure that this understanding becomes a shared asset for everyone.
